Established in 1974 as
the result of a merger between two other programs, the Queensway Titans
and the South West Vikings. The Titans fielded clubs at
the mosquito and peewee levels, while the Vikings were a bantam-level
team.
At
the close of the 1973 season, both teams found themselves facing
challenges that threatened their existence. Their respective executives
discussed the possibility of the Vikings being absorbed into the Titans
program to create a three-level operation.
Hank
Mews, president of Myers Motors, then a major sponsor of the Ottawa
Rough Riders, was approached with the idea of becoming involved. Reformed as Myers Riders,
the club was provided with much-needed resources for finding coaches,
players and equipment.
Myers
Riders
have since been consistently successful at their various age
levels. In 2008, the club won championships at the four NCAFA levels
at which it competes, and another in the junior ranks in the Quebec
Junior Football League, its third straight. Their midget club won
seven titles in the Ontario Minor Football League, including six
straight from 1994 to 1999, prior to joining the Ontario Varsity
Football League.
