Ottawa Citizen, July 8th, 1981: "They were called the Sooners, he (Bruce Hamilton) explained, because they used the old Oklahoma defence. The Okie and the Eagle were the popular defences then, and the Oklahoma team was called the Sooners, so Bruce decided to call the Ottawa club the Sooners"
4-time National Champions
11-time Ontario Football Conference Champions
2-time Quebec Junior football League Champions
History
Established
in 1960, the Sooners began play at the intermediate level (in the
Ottawa and District Intermediate Football League). They joined the
junior ranks in 1962, beginning play in the Interprovincial Junior
Football League and winning the league title.
The Sooners played
at the senior level in 1970 and 1971 in the Senior Ottawa Football
Union, again winning the league championship in their first season when
they defeated the St. Catharines' Rams 54-30 in a two-game total-point
contest. They returned to the junior level in 1972, becoming members
of the Quebec Junior Football Conference for two years, then the
Ontario Football Conference starting in 1974. They have since won the
Canadian Junior Football
Championship on four occasions; 1974, 1979 1984 and 1992. They were
runners-up on nine occasions (see scores below).
The
Sooners moved
to the Quebec Major Junior Football League in 1996 for financial
reasons and have won that league's Championship three times (1997, 2001
and 2002).
They would rejoin the Ontario Football Conference in 2009 and win that Conference's championship in the their first year back.
