Professional
football in the region can trace its roots to the formation of the
Ottawa Football Club in September of 1876. Aside from stoppages caused
by the two world wars, that team played uninterrupted until its demise in
1996 following many years of mismanagement. You can view the article
about the formation of the club at right.
The Ottawa Renegades took their place in the Canadian Football League, first taking to the field in 2002. They would last only four seasons after never having reached the playoffs.
In March 2008, the CFL announced it was awarding a conditionfranchise to a group that would come to be known as the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group. OSEG intends to field a team in 2013, though there is some question as to whether opposition to their proposal to renovate Lansdowne Park will delay that start date.
Lastly, a less celebrated club will be covered in this category as well in the Ottawa Trojans,
who played between 1944 and 1947. They ultimately merged with the
Rough Riders when that team returned to the field following WW2.
